My maiden effort into the world of spec writing was Sins of the Past, a story written in honor of my fellow Anne Rice fans. A sequel to Memnoch the Spec the idea behind Sins was that I would write a few starter chapters with enough material in them for other fans to brainstorm about. Well much to my surprise I found out that others considered the ideas I'd put down so good that they didn't want to touch them. Sins was put back into my lap to finish and I was given free reign to run with it as best as I could.
Today I consider Sins to be an obvious early effort of mine. I'll admit, though, that I am proud of some of what I did there and I'm also very flattered by those who tell me how much they enjoy it. It was also lucky enough to win a few awards as well so maybe it's not as bad as I think.
Author note #1: If you want to read Memnoch the Spec...well, good luck. It's been lost to the wilds of the internet and I have no idea where it is. If you find a copy, let me know.
Author note #2: When reading Sins you may come across a lot of subreferences. That was done on purpose. When I realized that Sins was a bigger project than I could handle I decided to sneak in as many different cultural references as I could for a bit of humor and a way of keeping my sanity. They're literally too many to list (I made an attempt to do so when I started) but they cover everything from Nine Inch Nails to Lovejoy to Disney. So when you come across them rest assured I was doing that on purpose. Consider it a scavenger hunt, if you will. You can also consider it a good reason why I call Sins "an obvious early effort". Oh well, we all do strange things when we start writing fanfic.
