Mace Windu had been a teacher, when Obi-Wan was a boy.
A tall man, and a powerful one. He towered over all the students as he lectured them on politics, and theory.
His lectures were dry, but the man himself was patient. Even to the point of letting Obi-Wan follow him after class with questions of his own. Never once did he speak cruelly, or push Obi-Wan away.
When Obi-Wan was older, he was a teacher still. This time in exercise. Saber lessons, then blasters. Always his voice was soothing, never once raised against the students no matter how far they misstepped. He would simply stop, and correct, and continue.
Obi-Wan could remember Mace's large hands over his, showing him the proper way to hold a light saber, feeling the surge of the Force around them both as Master Windu kept the saber from lashing out and hurting anyone while Obi-Wan's clumsy hands kept hold of it.
Obi-Wan had excelled in Master Windu's saber classes.
Later still, Master Windu became a part of the Council. Obi-Wan saw him time and again when he and Master Qui-Gon needed to report back about their missions, their work, and Obi-Wan's progress.
It was Master Windu, more than any other Council member save Yoda, who always made sure to add a final word of advice for Obi-Wan when these meetings came about. Never much, for Master Windu did not waste his words, but he made a point of it, and Obi-Wan tried hard to listen.
As Master Qui-Gon's friend, Mace Windu was a frequent visitor to their quarters, often stopping by to give Qui-Gon the latest news and gossip since his and Obi-Wan's last visit to Coruscant. And here, too, he would stop to include Obi-Wan and make sure the young teenager did not grow bored with his and Qui-Gon's conversation.
When Master Qui-Gon fell ill after a hyperdrive accident, Mace Windu made a special trip out to see him and make sure he and Obi-Wan were alright.
When Obi-Wan grew older and received his first commendation, Mace Windu presented it to him in the ceremony.
When after years had passed and Master Qui-Gon had finally told Obi-Wan of his affection and taken him to his bed, Mace Windu was the one person who Obi-Wan had - almost - told about it.
Mace Windu had known Qui-Gon for more years than Obi-Wan could fathom. And Mace Windu had been kind to Obi-Wan more years than he could remember.
Mace Windu was someone who Master Qui-Gon considered a peer and a welcome companion.
Mace Windu was someone who Obi-Wan considered a friend, and a trusted confidant.
And he was the one person, outside of Master Qui-Gon, that Obi-Wan held in any sort of esteem.
